For the Emperor and for Love is a historical fiction that appeals to adult readers of all ages. I have intertwined real characters and historical events with fictional ones and deliberately chose to write in the first person as the narrator relates his memoirs.
The story begins in the second half of the 19th century when Adam Dupont is a child living in Antibes, France and ends in New Orleans, Louisiana after World War I when Dupont is a grandfather. During his early military career, Dupont is chosen to go on a secret mission to North Africa, in the midst of the Franco-Prussian war, where he fights for his life. After being stabbed and left for dead, he is rescued by a Jewish family in Oran. Dupont falls in love with Shoshanna; however, his personal struggle between love and honor, and unexpected events, tear them apart. Dupont encounters and fights against a society of arms dealers and assassins called the Malekites. He is captured by pirates, sold as a slave and travels to India where his irresistible French charm leads him to a better life.
